Momma's Baked Beans...Remixed
Last stop on Memory Lane: Momma’s Baked Beans!
Momma and I tend to disagree on a lot of things simply because our points of references are contradictory. Momma is way more purposeful with the way she promotes her flyness. Though she does not have to since she wakes up glistening swag! I, on the other hand, am a lot more lowkey...if you recognize my flyness, blessed you are. I don’t wear make up or heels and will sometimes iron my clothes...for work. I moved to natural hair while in high school, whereas Momma dabbles in the natural here and there. Yet and still, like a true mother, she loves me AND claims me in public!
Where we do see eye-to-eye is in the kitchen. She trained me so our movements are very similar. If we do not agree on something, it is typically because of my tastes. For example, I grew up eating and making Momma’s baked beans. They are sweet and thicke, with a kick. Barbecuing is not the same without them! But moving to the east coast has changed my ideas of what baked beans should taste like. I discovered I like my beans to be a little more savory with a hint of sweet. So I took what I know of Momma’s recipe and went ROGUE! Below you will find my take on Momma’s Baked Beans. Let me know what you think :)
Money Matters
This dish cost me about $12 dollars to make, but the cost could be closer to $20 depending on how many ingredients you already have on hand. At $12 for 8-10 servings, it’s about $1.50/serving. Pretty good for a side dish at a BBQ…

There are a lot of things you can do to switch this dish up:
- Add more sugar to make the liquid thicker, if you want a syrupy feel
- You can skip the pineapple, it is a preference
- The range on the amount of meat is also based on preference--some like it meaty, some don’t...
My Take
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ - 1 pound ground beef
1 medium white onion, diced
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, diced
½ jalapeno, seeded and minced
1 28 ounce can of chili beans
½ 14 ounce can diced pineapple
⅓ cup brown sugar
Salt
Pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat olive oil in skillet to medium high heat. Add onions, allow to cook for 5-7 minutes; then add garlic, jalapeno, and bell peppers, cook for another 5 minutes.
Add ground beef to veggies and continue to cook until meat is fully browed, no need to drain. Season with salt and pepper for taste.
Happy Cookin Y’all :)
