Broccoli Rabe
I love vegetables! I think having a urban farm in Nana’s backyard gave me an appreciation for vegetables and for the continual discovery of new ones. I typically default to brussel sprouts and spinach because they are easy to prepare, but I do enjoy finding new ones that are simple and take well to different flavors.
With that, broccoli rabe seems to be the latest craze. I am a fan, as you know, of cauliflower and broccoli...so this just seemed natural. I had it in DC once at Cava and really enjoyed it, so I figured I would give it a try at home. I finally did and fell in love with how easy(ish) this greenery is to cook. I went for Asian flavors this time, but I am excited to play around with broccoli rabe more in the near future! See my quick recipe below.
Money Matters
I spent about $3 for a 2lbs of broccoli rabe. I had everything else on hand. If you don’t, then it may come closer to $10 for 4 servings-- $2.50/serving.

The recipe below is a quick something I came up with, but I would potentially do a few things differently next time:
I might not blanch the rabe - just to see what the difference is.
I would love to see what happens with cumin added to the mix.
Throw some bacon in that skillet, AND use the fat!
My Recipe
2lbs broccoli rabe
3 tbsp sesame seed oil
3 minced garlic cloves
2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 ½ tbsp soy sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Rinse the broccoli rabe. Boil a pot of well salted water. Once the water has reached a rapid boil, add the rabe and let sit for 2 minutes. As the rabe boils, prepare a bowl of iced water for the second part of the blanching.
Quickly remove the rabe after the allotted time from the boiling water, and place directly into iced water. Let rabe sit in iced water for a few minutes, then pour out the iced water.
As the rabe sits in the water, heat the sesame seed oil in a skillet. Add garlic to the oil. Once the garlic becomes fragrant, add the chili flakes and stir for 1 minute. Add the rabe and soy sauce, and stir occasionally for 5-7 minutes. Remove from fire, add salt and pepper if needed. Serve and enjoy!
Happy Cooking Y’all :)
